Stromness is Orkney's second main town and lies on the south western tip of the Mainland on the shores of the bay known as Hamnavoe. This bay is a fine deep anchorage and is sheltered from everything but a south-easterly gale.

If like most visitors you sail to Orkney from Scrabster, Stromness will be your first port of call. Gliding into the harbour, you pass gable ends of neat stone houses, each with its own small pier or slipway. This view has greeted seafarers for centuries.

The first impression of Stromness is that of an old traditional stone built port that nestles comfortably against the hillside of Brinkies Brae. The main street through the town is very narrow with flag paving and a cobbled centre. Steep narrow roads climb the hillside on the north side of the street, while on the south, the houses and shops back onto the shore
