Leads weights for sea fishing

So the very basics are that you use a lead weight to anchor your bait to the sea bed where the fish feed.

There are two main types of leads and there are ones that are used for boat or beach fishing.

You will find that some may be used for both

Leads for sea fishing can be bought from any tackle dealer and range in price from 49 pence up to £3.00

Boat fishing leads
Boat leads range from 3oz to 2.5lb

Pear / Round head lead weights

These weights are used for when your current is not running to hard as they do not anchor to the bed . One of the cheapest types of lead are great if the ground is a bit rough as they are smooth sided offering less to get stuck in rocks

Ball lead weights
As the name describes these are moulded like a ball and are designed to roll around the sea bed . These are great if fishing smooth sea beds as they will allow your bait to cover the ground in search of the fish

Grip Lead weights
Mainly used when using the uptiding technique as the anchor themselves to the sea bed but when a little more pressure is applied the grips spring loose and the lead breaks free . For uptiding the most common weight is 8oz . They can also be used for downtiding . Do not use these on rough ground as all you will do is loose your lead
